Haiku

wood, color inks, hand made brushes

The book shown above is a book on 12 Haiku written by Yone Noguchi, as illustrated by me. The illustration style that was chosen here is using only paintbrush splashes.

The splashes are done with different colors to explain meaning, and deal with abstract expressionism to explain meaning as a reader found it. The styles show power due to its intense look but at the same time, it is a form of expressionism which show that whatever was made was embedded in the memory of the artist as he made it. This is how Yone’s haiku are too.

Because of its abstract expressionism style, it was important that the medium was one which was not rigid like pastel colors. Since the base was wood, the medium opted was ink because of its flowy style. Watercolor could have been used to, but ink seemed more authentic, and the colors come out better on wood, since watercolor was absorbed more and looked dull and not strong enough as it needed to be for it.
