Madhubani Cards

Madhubani art is practiced in the Mithila region of India and Nepal. The painting is done with fingers, twigs, brushes, nib-pens, and matchsticks, using natural dyes and pigments, and is characterised by eye-catching geometrical patterns. There is ritual content for particular occasions, such as birth or marriage, and festivals, such as Holi, Surya Shashti, Kali Puja, Upanayana, Diwali and also of Durga Puja. Playing cards have been a tradition in India since a very long time. I thus created Madhubani themed playing cards.

Breaking the consistent style of the playing cards, I drew an Indian bride as the queen and a groom as the king in Madhubani style, breaking the convention and opting for a common man and woman as the king and the queen.

Also, in Hinduism, Lord Ganesh is the first to be worshipped before any auspicious occasion. Inspired by the following story, the aces are depicted as Lord Ganesh, because the aces are the foremost and the biggest cards in the deck. Each and every card has a story to tell.
